Oslo International Summer School
The University of Oslo (UiO) is Norway's oldest institution for research and higher education, with 28,000 students. The university celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2011. UiO has 8 faculties, 2 museums and several centers. Located in the capital of Norway, the university sits on the country’s southern coast at the head of the Oslofjord. The city of Oslo is known for its green spaces and museums. Many of these are on the Bygdøy Peninsula, including the waterside Norwegian Maritime Museum and the Viking Ship Museum, with Viking ships from the 9th century. There is also the Holmenkollbakken, a ski-jumping hill with panoramic views of the fjord. Oslo offers convenient public transportation (buses, trams, trains, and metros), and short distances make it easy to get around by walking or biking. As the oldest of the Scandinavian capitals with a history that dates back more than 1,000 years and over 500,000 inhabitants, many of whom speak English, Oslo is a very pleasant place to study.
During this 6-week program, students can take up to 2 undergraduate level courses or 1 graduate level course. All subject-specific courses are taught in English, but there are Norwegian language courses available as well. There is also a social program with weekend excursions for international students. Students can participate in one weekend excursion for free, and participate in others for an additional fee. Possible excursions include a trip to the South Coast, a weekend in Bergen, and hiking and white-water rafting in Jotunheimen.
