Program Description:
HELLENIC INTERNATIONAL STUDIES IN THE ARTS
HISA
Paros, Greece
Summer, Semester and Year-Long

About the Program
Founded in the year 2000, Hellenic International Studies in the Arts (HISA) is located in the historical and classical landscape of Paros, Greece, bringing together an interaction between students who desire more than a traditional lecture format with talented teachers and artists who wish to share their experience and knowledge. Drawing on extensive and diverse backgrounds in university teaching and administration, international art and academic seminars, the HISA group has consolidated their experience into a unique and creative learning environment.

The classical life of the Hellenic world dates back even before the times of Socrates and Plato. The great Homeric epics The Odyssey and The Iliad so familiar to us tell the mythic and real stories of Gods and Heroes which lay down the archetypes and patterns that inform all of Western Civilization, Literature, and Art. This is one of the reasons why the HISA program was founded on the island of Paros, classically situated in the center of the Cycladic island group, ninety miles southeast of Athens. So sited, Paros has become one of the great crossroads of the Aegean, and is served by daily ferry and air transportation. Such other popular destinations as Mykonos, Santorini, Crete, Rhodes and Turkey can all be reached in a few hours by ferry.

Since ancient times, the beautiful island of Paros has been a natural retreat for artists and writers. In keeping with this tradition, Paros today more than meets its reputation as a creative center. An active community of working artists and writers gives Paros an expressive and productive air that blends in well with the island's pleasant bohemian atmosphere. The vibrant local population is a valuable asset to HISA’s vision of a full social and cultural immersion.
